Features
Constructed of best British steel by British craftsmen to provide many years of trouble free service, unlike more expensive cast iron units.
Due to its rugged construction it is intended to be sited outdoors, so does not take up any valuable living space and keeps all the mess of woodburning out of your home.
Just construct your wood stack next to it to minimise effort of transporting wood. The quality steel and professional quality welding enables it to be safely lifted like this:

Large combustion chamber which will take up to a 75 x 40 cm piece of firewood, therefore minimising the cost of cutting and splitting. Or the hard work if you burn your own wood !
Large combustion chamber means less loading, in normal use it should only be necessary to load every 12 to 24 hours.
Large 650 litre unpressurised water jacket that almost completely encloses the firebox to ensure maximum heat transfer. This amount of water give a large reserve of hot water which enables quicker recovery times and better use of the power of the burner.
Only operates at full power when hot water is required, unlike batch burners that burn up a load of wood to provide a tank full of hot water. With these types of batch burners, once the temperature goes down it is necessary to reload with wood and relight the fire. Our burner only burns at maximum when the domestic hot water thermostat signals that it is needed, otherwise it just smoulders.
Large area at the top of firebox provides maximum gasification of the gases produced by the burning wood. Corresponding large surface area of water jacket ensures maximum transfer of heat to water.
Water jacket is insulated to sides by Superfoil SF19 insulation to ensure minimum heat loss from the outside of the burner. Even when at maximum power the sides of the unit do not get hot.
Ability to provide heat to more than one building, or to heat a swimming pool or hot tub as well as your house. Standard model has two sets of inlets and outlets.
Straightforward to install, use and maintain. Unlike other low carbon sources of heating there is no need for complex (expensive) fittings and plumbing.
Is it for you ?
If you own a property or run a business in a rural area then it is likely you are not on mains gas so have to rely on tank or bottled gas (LPG) or heating oil. And as you well know the price keeps going up. The prices might stabilise or go down for a while but long term the trend is up. The cold spell during January 2010 has driven heating fuel consumption up just after suppliers raised prices, for instance Calor Gas raised their prices from the 7th of December 2010, right in time for the big freeze !
When we first designed our product we wanted a solution to our home heating issues, primarily expense ! However there are other benefits for rural home owners, if you have a rural home and want to reduce your heating bills click here to find out more

Why burn wood ?
Simple.
Built to provide heat and hot water for many years
The Green Dragon is built by a highly respected engineering fabrication company in the North of England from the very best quality British steel and other components. Components are precision cut to exact design, and all welding is carried out to the highest standards. The completed unit is sheathed in plastisol, a plastic coated sheet steel, in a neutral dark green colour.
It is intended to be sited outside and is built accordingly to withstand all weather conditions.
The standard of construction and quality of parts used is intended to ensure long life and trouble free service. Unlike cast iron wood burners our product is built to last. In fact the unit is so solidly built that it weighs over 800KG !
We are so proud of the standard of engineering that we offer 10 year warranties, with manufacturers own one year warranty on the electrical components.
Cheaper to run
The Green Dragon is cheap to run (especially if you have your own sustainable supply of wood), it is easy to use, provides plenty of heat and is solidly built to last.
Electricity consumption is less than 2 amps maximum which can be supplied by a small wind turbine to further reduce dependence on fossil fuels, as well as costing even less to run !
How powerful is it ?
Our testing gave us a figure of 45kW. This sort of power is simply not achievable by ground source, air source or solar panels, a wood pellet burner of equivalent power will cost more than twice as much.
No complex electronics or mechanical parts to go wrong
Pellet and log feed boilers are complex and can let you down at the most inconvenient time.
The Green Dragon is built from heavy grade steel ensuring long life and reliable operation. The electrical components are reasonably priced and readily avaliable in case they need to be replaced and the wiring is simple with no complex and delicate electronics. The firebox is loaded manually so there are no complex feeds to break down or jam. As the firebox is so large it normally only needs refuelling every 12 to 24 hours, depending on weather conditions and usage.
Does not need expensive processed fuel
Pellet and log feed boilers need specially prepared fuel, with associated expense. The Green Dragon burns large pieces of rough cut wood, you can throw in a piece as heavy as you can lift ! No need to cut and split wood or worry about jams caused by oddly shaped wood, just load it up once or twice a day.
Why pay to burn someone elses wood that has a high environmental cost of transport and processing when you can burn your own wood.
No mess, smoke or fumes in your house
A wood fire with back boiler will dry out the air in your house, dust can cause allergies or asthma problems. Mess in the house, too hot indoors if lit up in summer, log stacks full of bugs and constantly having to carry logs in the house and carry the ash outdoors - more mess !
The Green Dragon is built to be used outside, away from your house and near your log pile.
Keep all the mess outside where it belongs, no need to carry wood into the house so no dirt, rubbish or bugs in the house and no ash to carry out. Less dust in the house from ash and smoke or fumes.
Easy to operate
Wood fires with back boiler needs constant attention and will go out overnight or if you go out for a few hours.
The Green Dragon will provide hot water with one load of wood, with 12 to 24 hours between loadings in winter, depending on outside temperatures.
In the warmer months the Green Dragon can still be used to provide hot water for non heating purposes, with up a week between loadings. A thermal store may be necessary for summer use, depending on hot water requirements.
Once a week the ash will need to be cleaned out. Thats it !
Low electricity consumption
The Green Dragon will only need 100 watts maximum in normal use, making it very suitable for use with a small wind turbine or PVA solar panel. Power cuts are not unknown in the countryside so using a turbine would ensure no loss of heating in the depths of winter. Even if you do not want the expense of a turbine, a large car battery and an inverter could be handy in the event of a power cut.
Payback period
The payback period is the time between installation and when it has paid for itself in fuel cost savings.
The Green Dragon will lower your fuel bills straight away as the cost per kWh of wood is less than diesel oil or LPG. If you can afford to store a lot of wood, you can get better deals from your local firewood suppliers, especially as they do not have to do so much cutting and splitting which lowers their processing costs. If you have your own wood supply its even better, just the fuel for your chainsaw and your own work.
Last year an energy expert stated on the radio that the payback period for other low carbon energy sources was long, in the case of geothermal he said it would be 27 years !
Of course everyone who has geothermal will tell you how good it is, as they have paid loads of money to have it installed. But we were told by someone in the alternative energy business about a new build small housing estate that had geothermal to all houses. The owners were so dissatisfied with the systems that they were taken out of service after less than two years use.
The Green Dragon will pay for itself in less than 10 years, and even less if your firewood is cheaper or free !
Got your own wood ?
Then with The Green Dragon you will be saving a lot of money !
OK, you will still need to manage your supply, cut the wood, stack it and season it but you will be self sufficient in heat for life !
With a wind turbine to provide the modest electric power needs of The Green Dragon it could be even better.
With many rural homes paying £1000 a year and more on heating oil or gas, the payback period for The Green Dragon will be rapid and as it is built to last many years you will have nearly free heat for life.
Safety
No smoke, fumes or carbon monoxide buildup in the house, no flames in the house and as our burner is non pressurised it cannot explode. Safe to leave running all night or if you go out.
Sadly about of sixty people a year die in the UK alone due to carbon monoxide poisoning due to badly or incorrrectly installed indoor wood burners.
Don't take chances, keep the fire and fumes outside.
Healthier
No drying of the atmosphere and no fumes or dust - so ideal for anyone with allegies or asthma.
